The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona was founded in 1968. The founders aimed to establish four principles of autonomy: freedom to select teaching staff, admission available to all students (but with a limited number), freedom to create its own study plans and freedom to administrate the University’s capital. It is therefore a young university, but in its short history it has moved forward at a rapid pace.
UAB’s structure includes three campuses, all in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona and its outskirts. Bellaterra: a large campus for teaching and research
The main UAB campus, in Cerdanyola del Vallès, is home to most of our faculties, departments, institutes and services, as well as to a significant scientific and technological cluster.
The Bellaterra campus is also home to the UAB Research Park, a group of centres and specific partner research institutes created to meet the specific needs for important fields of research.
Sabadell: committed to technology, business and work
Work began during the 2004/05 academic year on transforming the university schools in Sabadell into a full campus with undergraduate and postgraduate courses, research groups and services. This campus focuses on technology, business and employment.
Sabadell, along with the Bellaterra campus, will be the home to the School of Engineering and the Faculty of Business and Economics. Therefore the degree in Work Relations, coordinated by the Faculty of Law, will be available in Sabadell.
Sant Pau: a new Health Sciences campus
As the historical pavilions of Hospital de Sant Pau were gradually opened, UAB began transferring university lectures and research in the field of Health Sciences to this new site.
During the 2004/05 academic year, UAB began moving some parts of the Faculty of Medicine, such as the Office of the Dean, administration offices and conference halls to the new site. The next stage included activities which were transferred there, as well as the creation of halls of residence for students, researchers and lecturers. A large part of the lecturing and research structure of the Faculty of Medicine will remain at the Bellaterra campus, since it is not viable to move due to its special requirements.
Another important part of the new campus is the Sant Pau School of Nursing.
The campus at Sant Pau has increased the number of courses offered, with Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy and a wide range of postgraduate courses being made available.
